Looking for a class that’s totally different? Have you also always dreamed of being a rock star? Even if you were confused by the latter question, you should still check out Pound. Much like the class name suggests, Pound incorporates drumsticks (what they call Ripstix™, twice the weight of a standard drumstick) which you use throughout the
workout, beating the ground, as energetic tunes carry you through a journey of cardio moves. This new fitness wave is growing in popularity (though I admittedly had never heard of it before signing up for this class) and I found Joyce to be the perfect ray of light for my first foray into Pound.
The choreography of each song had us either standing or sitting. When standing, we often found ourselves moving in and out of lunges or squats, getting low enough so that you could reach the floor with your Ripstix™. When sitting, we focused on ab work and some crazy inner thigh exercises, all while beating to the rhythm of the songs. At one point, Joyce turned out the lights and I definitely felt an uptick in the class energy. The obvious joy of this class is the great curated songs with the bass that is perfectly synchronized to the beating of the drumsticks. Joyce really encouraged you to have fun with the moves and it was liberating to let loose. Everybody around me seemed to enjoy themselves. On this note, the choreography was easy to follow and the fast cardio bursts were simply sped up versions of the same moves we were previously doing at a slower tempo. So, no need to fear getting lost. Plus, Joyce was great about calling out the moves and helping keep everyone on the same tempo.
While this won’t be your sweatiest, hardest class on ClassPass, it’s still a solid addition to your exercise routine – plus, it’s fun. And there definitely is something to be said for that. And you’re still getting in your core, arms, and lower body work to boot. Check out a few videos to get a better sense of Pound – and do yourself a favor and try it out. Besides, when else will you get to play around with drumsticks aside from that one weird time in early adulthood when Rock Band was a thing everyone did? Exactly.
Pssssst: Steer clear of the general manager at Crunch – Bowery, Louis Rosales. He’s very friendly and I’m sure a nice guy in his general life but, boy, is he a hard sale for a personal training session. If you get caught, you won’t be released without a fight.
